For the plus size woman: The fact that you're carrying more pounds than you'd like doesn't mean you can't look great. One of the first things you need to do is clear your head of tired cliches that say you can't wear high fashion clothes. Proof that manufacturers respond to women's clothing needs is indicated by the fact that there are now several lines of clothing on the market made especially for overweight women, and these clothes incorporate the same fresh styles you see in "regular" clothes.
Develop a positive attitude about your looks based on the fact that you look good because you have taken the time to learn to dress your kind of body effectively. "I used to look like a frump," says one of my friends. "I hated the fact that I was fat so I just didn't do anything with my looks. Consequently, I made myself look even worse. I've learned that even if I don't always discipline my eating habits, I can still look attractive and looking this way communicates self respect."
If you are like this friend, learn to put yourself together well, you'll have more confidence. Here are some tips:
- Look for good fashion. You can wear it--pick anything from a straight-leg jean to a soft romantic look.
- Don't believe you can't wear prints or bright colors. Line and fit are more important than color.
- Never, never buy anything that doesn't fit you, especially something that's too tight.
- Try the misses sizes--even sizes such as 12 or 14. They're more likely to fit you than junior sizes.
As you've probably gathered, ease of fit is key for you. A garment that fits well will always look better--and appear to be of higher quality--than one that doesn't. You should aim for an easy fit, one that's not loose and not tight. Find it may mean refusing to buy some things because one size is too small and the next size is too big. If this is your problem, move on to another style no matter how much you liked the one that doesn't quite fit. Here are some guidelines:
- Straight-leg pants (no pleats or gathers)
- A-line skirts or dresses
- Long-line tunics
- Smock tops
- Reefer or chesterfield coats
- Wrap dresses
- Bias rather than gattered skirts or dresses
- Try a long scarf at your neck. It creates a long lean look
- Keep skirts, tops, stockings and shoes in the same color family. They will elogate and slim you visually.
- Don't forget makeup and hair. Soft pretty makeup and a flattering hairstyle will attract attention to your face and away from your body.
Picking Accessories
The old adage "less is more" applies here. Too many overweight women pile on accessories in the hope of drawing attention away from their bulk. It doesn't work, and in fact, has the opposite effect. Too many accessories make you look cluttered and chunkier than you really are. Think out your accessories carefully and make each piece you add serve a purpose. For example, if you decide on a long scarf, use it to lengthen your line and slim you down. Let the scarf be your most important accent. You might use a couple of strands of long beads to achieve the same effect. Remember that the gleam of gold or silver at your neck or on an arm can add a look of elegance, as long as you don't overdo it.
One common accessory mistake is picking the largest size bracelet, pin, earring, and so on to compensate for your bulk. True, you don't want to wear a tiny piece of jewelry, but you don't want the biggest, either. Pick average-sized accessories, they'll work best for you. A medium-sized handbag, a simple cuff bracelet, a pair of pretty bangles, these are all good choices.
